Embedded is your essential guide to what’s good on the internet, written by Kate Lindsay and edited by Nick Catucci.
*Slaps roof of newsletter* What would it take to get you into a paid subscription today? —Kate
Almost two years ago, Nick and I launched Embedded as a life raft. The creator culture website we founded in 2020 had shuttered, but we knew we had stumbled upon a type of internet coverage that was different: It focused on what’s good on the internet, prioritizing the ways it makes us more human, not less. To my surprise, and with my extreme gratitude, Embedded has grown a substantial readership and become a legitimate voice in the internet culture conversation—so much so that we stuck with it even when we got full-time jobs. I send Nick a lot of Google Docs on Sunday evenings, and for that I am sorry.
I joined The Atlantic last year to help launch their subscriber newsletter program, ended up helping to launch their TikTok, and started contributing to their tech section along the way (perhaps you’d like to yell at me about the Millennial Pause). My time there has been a dream come true, and transformed my writing for the better. Which is why I’m leaving my role there to focus on writing.
Embedded will now be my full-time endeavor. I’m so grateful to have this platform, especially for stories that wouldn’t fit on any other website (unless any editors have changed their minds about “What do I do about this Venmo request someone's owed me since 2017”). We’ll be continuing our normal Monday-Wednesday-Friday cadence (for those who notice when we fall off that cadence … no we didn’t), but now I’ll have the time to prioritize more in-depth, creative, and original coverage.
And if you upgrade your subscription now, you’ll get 25 percent off for one year!
I’m investing this time into Embedded because I think it’s worth it, and because it has so much more potential—especially if I can get your support. I will still write some stories that are too big for the newsletter, like my recent Atlantic article about the downfall of Instagram and unhinged year-in-reviews for Vulture, for other publications.
But Embedded will be my full-time job and first priority. You’ll get my takes and tips on trends and new creators here first. After all, I wrote about the Millennial Pause for Embedded before expanding on it in The Atlantic and then on TikTok. (And if you’re wondering what Nick does, he’s the one who just forced me to write those last two lines, bragging about being ahead of the curve.)
If you upgrade to a paid subscription, yes, you will get exclusive access to interviews and subscriber-only essays. But you’ll also enable me to keep writing this newsletter—all the money will go directly to me, after Substack gets its cut—and bring an even better Embedded to your inbox.
I also want to get to know you better. I’d love to chat about topics like influencer labor on your podcast, get coffee, or hear any thoughts you want to share by replying to the newsletter or emailing me at kathrynflindsay@gmail.com.
Thank you for everything. Maybe this will be the year we finally have that Embedded party Nick and I have been talking about.
